Madeley criticises 'X Factor' expectations

Richard Madeley has complained that The X Factor creates false expectations for children.

The TV presenter said the reality singing contest was at the heart of a new "celebrity culture".

"Kids really think they can get fame overnight because, just very occasionally, they see it happen," said Madeley, speaking at the Cheltenham Literature Festival.

"It is very dangerous for them because it sets them up for massive disappointment."

Madeley also revealed that he was recently handed a demo CD by a boy at a service station who was hoping to start a music career.

"It was awful. He'll probably be in line for X Factor next year," he said.
