Watchdog Ofcom confirmed that it is investigating "a number" of complaints surrounding the incident, which saw Hylton pointing her fingers at Daniel Evans as they headed into Saturday's sing-off.
A show source told The Mirror that some viewers perceived the act as Hylton "condoning gun use". The North London contestant was sentenced to community service for attacking a pensioner eight years ago and served a jail term for attempted burglary.
The source said: "She knew what she was doing and knew the cameras were watching so it was pretty stupid, especially given her background. Judging from this backlash, I hope she has leaned her lesson and won't do this kind of thing again."
ITV has also received about 50 complaints. However, a spokeswoman for the reality show said: "Rachel in no way meant offence."
The 26-year-old hit the headlines earlier this month when she reportedly fired mentor Dannii Minogue over artistic differences.
The rumours were later denied and Minogue has since defended her protegé, claiming Hylton's "diva" portrayal in the press is "unfair".
