Reports suggest that the supermodel was first offered the new job in February after striking up friendships with Simon Cowell and last year's winner Alexandra Burke.
According to the Daily Express, Cowell originally hoped to recruit Moss for the programme's judging panel but was informed that she would be too busy for the commitment.
The star is instead expected to make regular appearances on the live finals later this year, advising contestants on fashion and self belief.
A show insider told the newspaper: "Simon and Kate became friends after the last series. He thinks she is a great girl and wants her to do something on the show but there's a clash with scheduling and her diary so she won't be able to commit to being a judge.
"The idea is that she could be executive stylist and dress the finalists and teach them about deportment and confidence on stage. She wouldn't just dress them and leave them to it, though - shots of her advising them would feature heavily."
An X Factor spokesman insisted that there are no current plans to hire Moss, adding that it is "too early" to confirm names for the next series.
