Archer, 33, reveals that he has been singing in pubs and clubs for many years without success or ever getting his big break.
"Music means everything, I've played in all sorts of horrible places," he tells the cameras. "Nobody seems to enjoy what I'm doing or appreciate it, your confidence gets knocked and you think is it ever going to happen for me.
"Today is the most important thing I've ever done - I'm 33 years old – it's now or never really."
Speaking to Cowell in front of the audience, he says: "I'm a musician, I play small places and wanted to play a bigger crowd. I'm a musician, not a businessman, so I have no idea how to get into music business."
When Archer begins singing his version of Kings of Leon's 'Sex On Fire', Cowell is so impressed that he starts mouthing the words along with the performer from his chair.
Afterwards, Dannii Minogue comments: "Thank you for coming to the auditions, to see someone who loves performing like that, it was brilliant."
Cheryl Cole adds: "You're a natural born entertainer!"
The X Factor continues on Saturday at 7pm on ITV1.
