Unlike previous series, where hopefuls would audition just in front of the four judges, contestants must now perform with backing music to a live audience of thousands.
According to Angry Ape, Donnelly said in a recent interview: "I personally thought it was better in the audition rooms and one-on-one with the judges.
"To do the auditions in a small room before going to boot camp and then on to the big live studio shows to me was a more logical journey.
"It's a very big audience to be auditioning in front of."
As previously reported, a recent poll found that 70% of viewers did not prefer the new set-up, with many complaining that it bears too many similarities to Britain's Got Talent.
