Cole, who is mentoring the boys, worried that Lloyd Daniels had been "let down" because she asked him to sing the Leona Lewis track 'Bleeding Love'.
After Daniels' performance, Simon Cowell described the track as "too big" for him and added: "I'm going to put the blame with [Cheryl]. She's not working with you properly, understanding you properly, giving you the right material to survive in the competition.
"I do think you're talented, you're likeable, but you're not being directed properly at the moment."
Asked for her views on Daniels' rendition of the song, Cole began to cry and said: "I take full responsibility for the song. I found it really tough this week, it was diva week..."
Daniels got off the stage and gave Cole a hug as she mouthed: "I'm sorry."
Cowell also comforted the Girls Aloud star, while Daniels said: "Don't get upset, Cheryl. You've done me proud."
The X Factor results show is on tomorrow at 7.45pm on ITV1.
