Feltz: 'Watching Whitney was agony'

Rex Features

Vanessa Feltz has claimed that Whitney Houston should have reacted differently to her X Factor wardrobe malfunction.

Houston became distracted when a strap on her dress gave way as she performed her new single 'Million Dollar Bill' on the ITV1 talent show at the weekend. She later joked about the incident as she chatted with the programme's host Dermot O'Leary.

Writing in her Daily Express column, TV personality Feltz commented: "When you have a wardrobe malfunction, and you will, we all do, don't do a Whitney. When her bra strap lost the will to live on Sunday night's X Factor, Ms Houston brought us the worst of both worlds.

"She didn't ignore it and sashay forth as if it wasn't happening. She didn't acknowledge it, make a wry face, raise her eyes heavenward and let us all in on the joke. Instead, she looked uncomfortable and rattled but carried on singing.

"It was agony. We didn't know which of her garments would 'ping' next and we knew she didn't either. She was tense and nervous. So were we. A good time was had by none."

She added: "Should you be faced with 'a Whitney', smile, shrug, act as if nothing more amusing has ever occurred. That way you'll have the audience eating out of the palm of your hand instead of wishing they could put you out of your misery."

Houston's performance was seen by 13.17m viewers on Sunday night.
