The group's singer/rapper Graziella Affinita told BBC Newsbeat that Johnson's attitude is a front he only uses for performing on the show.
Graziella said: "He's got it down, he knows how to be a performer. He puts it all out there on stage, but when he comes off he's super-humble, super-caring.
"That armour he wears to fight for his position in the competition, he just takes it off."
The group, who were eliminated from the show on Sunday, also claimed that "sweet" Johnson helps other contestants in the house with their laundry and bed-changing.
Show boss and mentor Simon Cowell has blamed media reports that Johnson is a bully for his placement in the bottom two on last weekend's programme.
