Billy Turnbull revealed that McElderry owes his success to the support of 75-year-old Hilda Joyce, who has always kept his feet on the ground.
Turnbull, 18, told the Sunday Mirror: "Joe's nan is his biggest fan. She has always supported him, no matter what. When his parents split, she was like his rock. He's going to win the show - and he'll do it for her."
He added that McElderry has been overwhelmed since auditioning for the ITV1 show.
"When I speak to him on the phone he says he wishes he could walk away from it for a day just to clear his head and really sit down and think. It's all happened so fast - he says he wants a chance to take it all in before it's over," he said.
McElderry sang 'Open Arms' by Journey and Michael Jackson's 'She's Out Of My Life' on last night's show, winning the praise of all four judges.
