'X Factor' Final: What the judges said

By
Tonight's X Factor final saw Olly Murs and Joe McElderry battle it out for a £1m recording contract, but before the winner was announced they had two more chances to impress the public. As well as performing one of their favourite songs of the series, the pair both belted out their version of 'The Climb', this year's winner's song. Read on to find out what Dannii Minogue, Louis Walsh, Cheryl Cole and Simon Cowell had to say about their performances.

Olly Murs - 'Twist And Shout'

Louis: "Olly, Olly, Olly! Olly, you always, always, always entertain us, you're what the show is all about. You love music, you're bubbly, you're sexy. Olly, you're a born, born showman and no matter what happens tonight you're going to have a great career in music, because you deserve it. I hope everyone votes for you."

Dannii: "That was another great performance, and not only will you have fun on the X Factor tour but everyone who comes along will be waiting for your performances."

Cheryl: "That was another fantastic performance, Olly. I'm so thrilled to see you standing up there in the final two and I wish you the best of luck. I thoroughly enjoyed that performance, and you looked like you enjoyed it, so good luck."

Simon: "Olly, forget about the tour - we're here for one reason only and that's to win The X Factor tonight. You know what, there could be an upset tonight. What people love about you is you're fearless, you put on a great show. That was fantastic and brilliant, well done."

Joe McElderry - 'Don't Stop Believin''

Louis: "Geordie Joe, you are what this show is all about. You've got everything, you've got the voice, you've got the attitude, you've got the charm. You're a small boy with a big voice and a great, great future."

Dannii: "Joe, you've definitely got the best voice on the stage tonight, no doubt. And what I loved is you've been given the opportunity to have this record contract and this opportunity, and you've taken it with both hands and never let go during the entire competition. Congratulations."

Simon: "I remember the first time I saw you, and I think I remember telling the other three [judges] this guy could win the entire show. So in a way I feel responsible for your success and I'm thoroughly proud of what you've achieved. That was a brilliant choice of record - it's not a well-known song and you could have a hit record with that song. Overall, you've had an incredible series and once again tonight you were brilliant. Thank you."

Cheryl: "I know the whole of the nation believes in you, and everyone here believes in you too. My message to you is don't stop believing, because you can do this and I believe you can."

Olly Murs - 'The Climb'

Louis: "Olly, I love the song. It's going to be a massive hit no matter who sings it. You always give 100%, you look very, very comfortable, amazing. I like everything about Olly Murs, everything."

Dannii: "Olly, I have never heard you sing like that. Where did that come from? I can tell you're so nervous and you really want this, but you held it together for that performance. Congratulations - that's a voice I've never, ever heard before."

Cheryl: "You sang that absolutely beautifully, you absolutely tore it from your soul. I've never heard you sing like that. I thought it was a beautiful version of the song and I wish you the best of luck."

Simon: "Well, Olly, you just answered every criticism of you - people saying you can't really sing, you're just a bit of a dancer, you're just a bit of a singer - you just proved a point when you needed to. And I can see now how much this means to you, and I really, really, really hope people get behind you after that performance and give you the support you deserve, I really do."

Joe McElderry - 'The Climb'

Louis: "Joe, as always a note-perfect performance. I love this song - this song is going to sell a million copies, it'll be number one for Christmas. I loved Olly's version, but I'm going to put my neck on the block - I think you have the edge, because you've got the better voice I think, Joe."

Dannii: "Joe, that was a beautiful performance and what said so much was that it was effortless. You didn't have to try. It was beautiful, it's one of my absolute favourite songs, and there's something that happens when you hit the top notes - I get tingles. I love it."

Simon: "Joe, this is the first time I can really, really see and feel your nerves. I thought you started the song a little shaky and then, annoyingly, you were brilliant on the last half. So, you know what, I can't call this now. I genuinely can't."

Cheryl: "Whatever happens, whatever happens, Joe, you've been not just a pleasure to listen to but a pleasure to work with. I've thoroughly enjoyed getting to know you and I hope tonight you achieve your dream."
