The 31-year-old performer, who has worked with stars including Ozzy Osbourne, Clay Aiken, Meat Loaf and Carrie Underwood, had apparently boasted to his rivals that he is a certainty to make the live shows.
"He is very, very confident. But it didn't exactly impress judge Simon Cowell in his [Boot Camp] audition," a source told The Sun.
"It left some of the less experienced hopefuls feeling worried, though. They felt they could not compare to someone who had so much experience. Tensions ran so high that some even got teary, fearing he had the edge."
Lee released an electropop album titled Soulfillapopkilla two years ago and has released two singles. He also appeared on the NBC gameshow The Singing Bee and performed the theme tune for US reality series Step It Up And Dance.
The X Factor returns later this month to ITV1.
