Cardle, who appeared at the London auditions last week, claimed that he applied for the ITV1 show to finally get his "career off the ground".
Speaking to the official X Factor website, he said: "I started singing at school when I was 11 years old. I've been in bands ever since.
"I sing in pubs. People don't always like it or listen, which kills me a little bit. It's a bit soul-destroying. I don't want to be background music anymore. I want to get my career off the ground."
The performer, who sang Amy Winehouse's 'You Know I'm No Good' at the auditions, also revealed that his music influences range from Pearl Jam and Dave Matthews Band to Rage Against The Machine.
The X Factor continues on Saturday at 7.30pm on ITV1.
