Speaking to category mentor Cheryl Cole and her assistant will.i.am, Katie tells them that she is unique and wants to be a "star" in everything from music to fashion to medicine.
She adds: "At the forefront of my mind is to go out there, focus and nail the song. I will be a star. I will do this. I will not take no for an answer."
After starting her rendition of 'Smile' by Lily Allen, Katie breaks down in tears. A concerned Cheryl asks: "What's wrong babe?"
"I’m so sorry, it’s an emotional song for me," Katie explains. "This is my last shot for you guys so can I just take a breath, I'm sorry."
Cheryl allows her to restart the song, which she successfully completes second time around. "Do you think stopping halfway through might have cost you?" host Dermot O'Leary asks outside.
"Um, I don't know," a nervous Katie replies.
Other songs performed in the Girls' category include Rebecca Ferguson's performance of 'Fireflys' by Owl City, Gamu Nhengu's rendition of 'Cry Me Out' by guest X Factor judge Pixie Lott and Keri Arrindell's alternative choice of 'Wake Me Up When September Ends' by Green Day.
The X Factor airs tonight at 7.05pm on ITV1.
