Paddy Power has claimed that it has had a "betting frenzy" on X Factor's Gamu Nhengu overnight.

The bookmakers started taking bets on Nhengu winning the TV talent show, following rumours that she may rejoin the competition as a wild card entrant.

Earlier today, reports suggested that Nhengu had lost out to Treyc Cohen in the battle to be Cheryl Cole's wild card act in the girls category, but that has not halted the influx of betting on the Zimbabwe-born singer.

"If this is the case and Gamu is definitely out I wish someone would tell our punters," said a Paddy Power rep. "Over the past 48 hours there has been nothing short of a betting frenzy behind Gamu with numerous bets as big as £2,000 placed on her to win and forcing her odds into 5/2.

"The saying goes that money talks and I honestly believe we’ll be in for a big surprise this weekend."

Nhengu is currently rated at 5/2 with Paddy Power and punters will get their money back if she does not take part in the live finals.

Ex-painter and decorator Matt Cardle is the favourite to take the crown out of the original Top 12 acts and has odds of 11/4. Rebecca Ferguson 10/3, 1 Direction 7/2 and Cher Lloyd 5/1 are also getting plenty of support.

Over 28s Storm Lee (20/1) and Mary Byrne (22/1) and boyband FYD (25/1) are currently the outsiders.

The X Factor airs at 7.40pm on Saturday on ITV1.
