Cole was accused of not giving her full attention to Cohen by rival judge Simon Cowell on last night's Halloween special.
Cowell attempted to catch the Girls Aloud star out, asking her where Cohen lived. After an awkward delay, the popstar replied correctly that it was Birmingham.
Speaking in defence of her mentor on The Xtra Factor, Cohen told Konnie Huq: "Our connection is cool. Cheryl is always there and always texting us. She is encouraging me to get my connection across with the audience with lyrics. She's cool."
When asked about the judges' criticism of her performance of 'Relight My Fire', she said: "I think my thing is the little girl with the big voice. I'm a little bit confused whether I need to be the same every week, or do a different genre or just keep doing what I'm doing."
Cowell claimed that Cole was letting down her act because so far she had failed to "make a connection" with viewers at home. "That's your responsibility," he told his fellow judge.
Cohen was in the bottom two last weekend, but was saved by the judges in the sing-off.
