X Factor stylist Grace Woodward has blamed "snide comments" from some of the female acts on this year's show for Cher Lloyd's week one "meltdown".

The singer reportedly threw a tantrum and refused to wear the outfit originally picked out for her by Woodward before the first live show.

Woodward told Heat: "Cher's only 17 and is still working out who she is. She had a real meltdown in the first week because of the snide comments made by some of the other female acts.

"It feels like school backstage, with the bitching and general confidence-knocking tactics. [Mentor] Cheryl [Cole] had to rebuild her self-esteem, so she lent her some boots."

The fashion director recently described Lloyd as "a special case" who "needs special handling".

Of Katie Waissel's first-week styling, Woodward said: "This outfit caused the most controversy. Katie's interested in fashion, so she has quite high demands and started to wig out a bit backstage, which was largely due to nerves.

"In the end, it was actually Brian Friedman and Katie who chose what she wore - but I got the flak for it!"
