The duo, who have been romantically linked repeatedly during this year's X Factor, were photographed sharing an intimate moment together backstage over the weekend.
However, both singers have rubbished claims that they are an item.
Writing on Twitter, Malik said: "Hey fans, I just thought I'd let you guys know don't believe the hype. We're just friends and that was a friendly kiss... All my fans can have a friendly kiss."
Lane added: "It was just as friends, finale and all. It's just hype... Look it was a joke that backfired guys. Mistake, so sorry. I suppose the damage is done. I'll just brace myself for today's bundle of abuse."
