Burke won the 2008 series and has gone on to find chart success, including three number one hits.
She told OK: "Do not judge X Factor contestants. Give them a break. They're doing a fantastic job."
Burke described how she had attempted to kickstart her career by playing any venue that would have her.
She said: "I've been singing in bars from the age of 9. So anyone that tells me I don't deserve this position, you're wrong. Because I've worked really hard for it.
"No-one sees what goes on behind the scenes. Those contestants are up at the crack of dawn and going to bed very, very late and they are doing the best they can and working very, very hard."
The singing competition has faced severe criticism from many music industry icons including Elton John and Paul Weller, as well as the show's first winner Steve Brookstein.
