Michael performed an acoustic cover of the Beatles hit 'Ticket To Ride' on Saturday's Live Show. His Take That star mentor said that he had "totally reinvented a classic" after his performance, but decided to let him go in Sunday's quadruple elimination.
The 20-year-old singer claimed that he had always had doubts about the song selection.
"I said that I didn't think the song would work, but Gary claimed that he was over the moon with it and I just went with it," Michael revealed.

"I think the only problem I had and the only mistake was that one little song choice. If we hadn't picked that song, I think I'd still be there.
"I'd have chosen something current or new like a James Morrison song or a Paulo Nutini."
He added: "I thought I should do a happier song with more vocal range in it. I wanted to smile, stand up and move around a bit. I think that would have done it for me."
Michael also revealed that he is hoping to continue with his musical dream by working with a band.
"I'd love a great musical band behind me. I'd love, you know, bass, guitar, pianos, brass and all things like that," he said. "A good, really big, nice band like that. I want to get in the studio, start jamming with bands and make some music."
The X Factor continues on Saturday at 7.45pm on ITV1.
