ITV's director of entertainment Elaine Bedell has insisted that The X Factor is not in a ratings crisis.

Speaking to Broadcast, Bedell branded the media criticism of the revamped show "ludicrous" and spoke highly of the new lineup.

She reserved special praise for Tulisa Contostavlos for bringing "rawness" to the talent show, which has grown its share of younger viewers aged between 16 and 34 from 26% to 27%.

However, she admitted that the increased number of clashes with Strictly Come Dancing has hurt the show.

Overall, X Factor's overnight figures have fallen 16% compared to this time last year, while Strictly has seen a 6% drop.

Last Sunday, ITV issued an apology after Frankie Cocozza swore on camera, while Louis Walsh retracted bullying claims he made about Misha Bryan.
