The Scottish singer, who was controversially dropped at the Judges' Houses stage in 2011, stuns the judges when she appears at the Glasgow auditions with a brand new look.
Speaking to Xtra Factor's Caroline Flack, Richards says: "I got to Judges' Houses last year. I was in Kelly Rowland's group. When she first said I was going home, I was so gutted. After that I was like, 'Right, I just have to get on with it, get started again, get gigging'.
"I started going to the gym and lost quite a bit of weight... When I got the no it has made me more determined to come back. Puts some fire into you, I think."
Louis Walsh was reduced to tears after Richards's audition last year, while Gary Barlow claimed that her performance would "change her life". However, she ended up missing out to Sophie Habibis, Amelia Lily, Janet Devlin and Misha Bryan when it came down to the final cut.
This year's audition from Richards has a similar effect to last year's, with guest judge Anastacia commenting: "I have hairs on my body that are standing up that I didn't know existed."
Louis Walsh adds: "I loved you last year, I love you this year. You're looking totally different, you're looking great!"
Richards's audition will air on this weekend's Xtra Factor.
The Xtra Factor, which is hosted by Caroline Flack, starts at 9.25pm on Saturday, September 1.
