X Factor ratings fell below 8 million last night (September 9) as the second audition show of the weekend was damaged by the Paralympics Closing Ceremony on Channel 4.

The ITV1 talent show continued to struggle to find its usual bumper ratings figures and dropped to a total average audience of 7.85m (which included 462K on +1).

An average of 7.39 million watched the auditions show, which featured performances from Eddy String and Lorna Bliss, live at 8pm.

During the hour that the show went head-to-head with the Paralympics, the Simon Cowell entertainment format did just edge a victory. It attracted a peak audience of 7.5m, compared to 6.65m on Channel 4.

However, the show's figures represented another slip in viewing figures, with around 400k less watching the show compared with Saturday's auditions.

The X Factor continues next Saturday on ITV1.
