Lucy Spraggan, Rylan Clark, Union J and Carolynne Poole are among the final 12 acts who were confirmed as this year's finalists.
The result will leave one judge with four acts, giving them an advantage entering the first week.
A similar wildcard twist was used in the 2010 series, but each judge was given an extra act rather than just one.
Last year, Amelia Lily was given an extra chance halfway through the live shows, following the departure of Frankie Cocozza and a subsequent wildcard vote with other axed hopefuls.
The X Factor continues with its first live show on Saturday, October 6 at 8pm on ITV.
