'X Factor' Union J: 'We started off as the weakest' - video

By and Amie Parker-Williams
X Factor semi-finalists Union J have accepted that they "were the weakest act" at the beginning of the live shows.

Speaking to Digital Spy at last night's X Factor secret gig, the boyband stressed that they have "worked hard" to show that they can be "credible artists".

"When we got here week one we were the weakest act," band member Jaymi Hensley argued.

"We've worked hard enough to get here... on talent [alone], and not because we've been put together on the show."

With the band saying they would like to emulate One Direction and Leona Lewis, he continued: "It'd be nice for people to see that we are actual artists. We have worked all our life for this.

"As much as we are in a boyband, we are all songwriters and... we play instruments. We wanna show that we can go out and be credible artists."

Hensley also spoke of the "absolutely amazing reaction" to him coming out, revealing that a female fan had said her brother was "really depressed and in a really bad place" over his sexuality before the star revealed he was gay.

He said: "When I was younger I didn't have anyone to look up to and I always wish there was someone [who was] honest and open about it, and I thought who am I to sit here and not give that to these kids?"

The X Factor semi final airs tomorrow (December 1) at 8pm on ITV1.
