'The X Factor' Week Four Results Show - live blog

By
The X Factor 2012: Gary Barlow, Nicole Scherzinger, Tulisa and Louis Walsh

© ITV / Thames/Syco

We've brushed our teeth thoroughly before sitting down for tonight's X Factor results show, wary of unkind words from Gary Barlow and Tulisa Contostavlos.

Leaving the oral hygiene to one side, last night saw a performance from James Arthur that the judges loved, and our readers agreed, with 39.1% of you making him your pick of the night.

Three-time Digital Spy poll-topper Ella Henderson dropped to third place, while Christopher Maloney and A Clockwork Orange bad-boys District3 are in your bottom two.

Will the wider voting public agree? And after three consecutive weeks of deadlock, will the judges finally justify their appearance by sending someone home without our help?

Join Digital Spy's live blog from 7.50pm when The X Factor results show airs on ITV1 to find out.

20:59Thanks for spending the X Factor results show with us. We'll be back on Saturday for week five of the live shows, and hope you can join us then.

20:57On next week's results show, Rita Ora and No Doubt will be performing live. We're already unreasonably excited about Dermot's "banter" with both acts.

20:57Where do we go from here? We're not sure that The X Factor can support two boybands for much longer in the series. Then again, we were pretty sure that Rylan's "charm" had all but worn off by now, which shows what we know!

20:56"Stylish", "sexy", "wow", said Gary, way back when. Those things still hold very true, despite an iffy performance last night. "My life starts from today," she promises. We wish her the best of luck.

20:54And there it is. The first Judges' Decision of the series, and they've sent home Jade and kept Union J.

20:53Ooof, Nicole sends home Jade. Her reasoning seemed to be that Jade will get signed up by someone anyway.

20:53A suitably gory number of hearts have been sung right out of their bodies for Fright Night, apparently...

20:52Nicole and Gary, it's up to you.

20:51Will the judges Do The Right Thing and save Jade... or will they wimp out and send this one to deadlock? Again.

20:49It's Dido's 'White Flag' - famously the farewell song of Miss Diana Vickers, which prompted the Quiglett to run on stage, sobbing.

20:48Things started okay there, but there was more than a bit of a wobble on the chorus, as the boys "sing their hearts out" on Pink's 'Perfect'.

20:46Union J will sing first, and Jade will stand awkwardly on the side of the stage with Dermot, as is now the custom.

20:44It's the first time either act has been in the bottom two, so we don't have any past form to work on.

20:41And in the bottom two, it's Union J vs Jade Ellis.

20:41And the last act through is... Christopher!

20:40Boos greet news that Rylan lives to fight another day. Nicole leaps and wraps her legs around his waist. We shudder, instinctively.

20:40Kye squeals YES! as he is saved from the chop. Gary gives his most laddish "Well done, mate!" in return.

20:39Jahmene gives a pure, cheeky grin as he makes it through to week five. Friend of the site and Digital Spy fave overnight James Arthur follows.

20:38Ella is through. Despite being below her best, we're not in the least bit surprised. District3 look mighty relieved to be joining her.

20:37IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER.

20:37Gary, Kye and Chris(topher) look like quite a convincing reformed '90s boyband.

20:35Thinking about that Robbie performance over and over. It's getting to the stage where we absolutely adore the idea of Robbie, but we're not entirely convinced by the execution. He's a Proper Popstar, but it feels like he's trying too hard with the little we've heard of Take The Crown. Don't force it, Rob.

20:31The Robster gets a mouthful of confetti and a predictable standing ovation from the judges. He urges Gary to show Rylan "some love". Robbie then says that Ella blew him away with her voice last night (though we were quite underwhelmed).

20:29Robbie follows fun.'s lead and plays his biggest hit, 'Angels' starts cranking out his new single 'Candy'. "VOTE RYLAN", he yells after the first verse or so, despite the lines being closed. Let's hope Ofcom don't frown upon him.

20:26The wall of stats for Robbie Williams goes into overdrive. 17 Brit Awards... blimey.

20:25District3 and Jade are tipped for the bottom two by both Nicole and Gary. Tulisa says that Christopher would be her bet if she didn't know about his "following". Mind games!

20:24The shy and retiring Tom Daley is in the audience. He's looking more than a little tanned. Probably abroad training somewhere lovely. We're jealous.

20:20We think that Dermot O'Leary should interview all bands, everywhere, in every possible scenario. "Well done you!" indeed.

20:18If an up-and-coming group like fun. are giving the people what they want and aren't using a show like The X Factor to pimp their latest single, George Michael must be feeling a little sheepish. We quite enjoyed that.

20:16They're playing megasmash 'We Are Young', which is surprising, seeing as it was released ages ago and has already topped the charts.

20:14The first special guests fun. arrive. If you bump into them anywhere, be sure to call them "fun full stop". They deserve it for stylising their name in such an annoying way.

20:12Awww, Jahmene says "I'm my biggest critique". We think he means biggest critic. Either way, he's staying pretty humble despite the surprisingly lavish praise heaped upon him.

20:11He might have a point with Chris, but when Louis calls anyone a "cabaret panto star" he must surely be thinking "There by the grace of God..."

20:10Some more recapping, it seems like it was only yesterday we were watching these performances live on the telly. Backstage, Gary admits that he's not quite looking forward to the prospect of Rylan just singing a song without all the mash-up bells and whistles.

20:07The group song. A now-hallowed tradition that no-one seems to enjoy. Not the audience, not us at home, and definitely not the contestants. They're doing David Guetta's 'Without You' (that one with Usher).

20:04Tulisa just showed off an oversize nicotine patch during the famous Contostavlos Arm Gesture. Amazing.

20:02Louis says that he can smell "trouble" tonight. Better than a fag ash breath/red wine combo.

20:01Looking at the recaps, we didn't quite remember how much eye make-up everyone was wearing yesterday.

19:56After missing last week's premiere, we just caught the end of Surprise, Surprise. We can't hide our disappointment that Holly didn't belt out the theme song.
