'X Factor' semi-final results show - live blog

By
We're one week away from the X Factor final, and even though it may not have been a vintage series, excitement is starting to build even for the most cyncial of viewers as we had to the show's climax.

One act goes home tonight, Tulisa and Pink will perform, and Louis Walsh will hopefully be in as bonkers form as he was last night ("Westlife! Gary! Dermot! Westlife!").

Digital Spy will bring you live updates and our verdict on the action from 8pm.

21:00That's all, folks! See you next weekend for the big showdown and finale in Manchester. Dermot just confirmed that Kylie and Rihanna are playing. Ri-Ri on X Factor... that never happens.

20:57The guys get their own farewell song, which is nice. They look like lovely lads. If Maloney had finished bottom, would he have got this moment? Or would Louis and Tulisa just have thrown rotten fruit at him for two minutes?

20:54Louis Walsh steals Union J's last moment of glory by screaming his usual nonsense about "next big boyband". If he says it enough times, does it become true?

20:51It was Louis Walsh and the onesie that cost them.

20:50And JAHMENE.

20:49CHRISTOPHER.

20:49Are JAMES.

20:49The acts saved... in no particular order... except the one that is the most dramatic.

20:47The results are in. DUMDUMDUM! Lights down. *Serious Dermot face*.

20:45Pink has done very well for a popstar with one of the worst names in music. We almost forget that it's awful sometimes when she's singing.

20:44Dermot and Pink have a suitably awkward conversation about why she's never done the show before. Dermot tries to cover up the US singer's dirty cackle with his regulation "WHEN'S THE ALBUM OUT" and "WHEN'S THE TOUR" questions. Poor Dermot.

20:39Pink's a jolly good singer, isn't she? She'd make a rubbish reality TV talent show judge.

20:36Rightio, back to the action. Here's Pink! It's her first time on The X Factor, which seems quite surprising, all things considered. Could they not squeeze her in between the 67 Rihanna and Michael Bublé performances?

20:34This year's X Factor winner's single will be raising money for charity. Dermot's introducing a segment about the charity. So there's nothing funny or cheeky we can say right now. Sorry.

20:30Ah well, I must be getting old if that passes for a pop tune these days. If Christopher Maloney is "old fashioned" and "cruise ship" and Tulisa is "relevant", we'll have two tickets for the next ship to the Caribbean.

20:26It sounded like a drum machine being hit with some tin cans, while a woman screeched over the top.

20:25Maybe I'm getting a bit old, but this Tulisa track is a right old load of tosh, isn't it?

20:24It's time for Tulisa to show what she's all about and perform. She's basically putting herself up for a Twitter kicking, so fair play to Miss Urban Roots.

20:22Dermot is doing his chat with the acts backstage. This bit is never awkward and stilted. It's always so thrilling and enlightening. *BOOM*. Sorry, our sarcasm machine just imploded.

20:13We get the regular recap of last night's show. If you missed it there were lots of tears, much talk about nans, late relatives, Scherzinger rambling about God, Tulisa being in a grump and Louis Walsh making obscene comparisons between Union J and the Beatles.

20:10Dermot also appears to have caught Louis Walsh-itis and is just shouting "ROD STEWART" at random intervals.

20:09Dermot O'Leary fulfils his duties and has a suitably awkward Q&A with Rod Stewart about tours and albums that are "ON SALE NOW".

20:09There's a cheesy old crooner on the stage. And there's also Christopher Maloney. Ba-dum tish!

20:07Woop, it's the X Factor group performance time. This week there's a special twist. The final four are joined by Rod Stewart. Christopher Maloney's nan will be well chuffed. In fact, all Christopher Maloney's fans will be very happy with the wrinkly old rock icon.

20:04Tulisa has thankfully chosen to cover up her cleavage a little bit this evening. I didn't watch The Xtra Factor last night, but I'm guessing from the bursting dress in the live show, you probably got a bit of nipple on ITV2.

20:02Will Maloney make it all the way to the final? Can Union J pull something out of the bag and defy the odds and survive? To be honest, I don't have a clue anymore. I thought Carolynne might win the thing. Shows what I know.

20:00Evening, everyone! We hope you've got plenty of nails because you're going to need something to bite tonight. Tense? Doesn't even cover it.
