BBC One controller Jay Hunt announced last week that the 66-year-old choreographer had been axed in favour of former show champion Alesha Dixon, 30, leading to widespread allegations of ageism.
The corporation confirmed to The Guardian last night that 951 viewer complaints have so far been registered over the matter.
Additionally, more than 890 people are known to have protested by joining groups on the social networking site Facebook.
Former Strictly stars Louisa Lytton, Fiona Phillips and Rachel Stevens have also publicly backed the former panellist in recent days.
Strictly Come Dancing will return to BBC One in the autumn.
