'Strictly' Week One: What the judges said

Published Friday, Sep 18 2009, 22:59 BST | By Alex Fletcher
The first eight celebrities kicked off Strictly Come Dancing series seven tonight. Keep reading to find out what the panel, including new judge Alesha Dixon, made of their Ballroom performances.

Here's what the judges had to say:

Rav Wilding and Aliona Vilani

Len: (6) "Rav, it's the first show, the first dance, I would like to say first class, but I can't quite say that. However, you came out and attacked it. You were strong. Like a lot of men, it had a good start, but a disappointing finish."

Bruno: (5) "Rav - first one out, you managed to ravage the Tango. You went for it and it was good. But you need refinement and listen to the music."

Craig: (3) "I was rather excited when you came to the floor, but your hands went flat and spatulistic. It looked like you have velcro stuck to them... An awful lot of work to do."

Alesha: (5) "He certainly looked the part, didn't he girls! You didn't stop trying and I have to say well done for giving it your all."

Total: 19

Ricky Groves and Erin Boag

Len: (6) "You did look elegant. It's hard to control, but I thought you had great control throughout. You just need a better top frame, but very well done."

Bruno: (5) "The major technical problem is your shoulders. You hunched. I've seen more romance between Gordon Brown and David Cameron. You have to get in character more and sell it."

Craig: (4) "I have to agree. You looked like a terrified spare part. There is no relationship between you. You have to form a partnership."

Alesha: (5) "My heart is still beating for you. You looked so nervous. Show me your acting skills though. Show me your mood through your face."

Total: 21

Chris Hollins and Ola Jordan

Len: (7) "To be honest, I agree with nothing that Craig said. You had great body contact. The first week you are just happy to get through the dance. I'm looking at you and that first dance and I think you should be pleased with yourself."

Bruno: (6) "At times you looked like you were sucking a lemon. Lemon sucking! Your timing was good but watch your kicks. Point your feet when you flick... but it was a very good effort."

Craig: (6) "Wild, sexy and passionate it wasn't. There was plenty of trout mouth all the way through. The facial expressions were making me feel rather peculiar."

Alesha: (7) "You really surprised me. You had the energy between you and you were telling the story with your face."

Total: 26

Jade Johnson and Ian Waite

Len: (6) "I thought you had great musicality and you also had great movement. You are a tall couple, which was great for the Waltz. However, watch out because with your left hand you clung on a bit."

Bruno: (6) "I can tell you can go very far. You have a watchable quality, but you can be a bit too messy. Get to ballet classes. Can't wait to see your Latin!"

Craig: (6) "I think you have long elegant lines, but they were a bit hampered by your hands. A bit lumpy when you did the back standing spin, but overall the routine was first class."

Alesha: (7) "You both look great together. You have great potential Jade, and I'm looking forward to your Latin."

Total: 25

Martina Hingis and Matthew Cutler

Len: (6) "It's disappointing. I think you are too loose in your core. It looked like you'd collapse if Matthew wasn't holding you up. There were a few foot faults."

Bruno: (6) "Martina you are so elegant, but you are still a bit tight. It looks like you are pushing him away. I know it's very hard first time though. Alesha is bitter!"

Craig: (4)

Alesha: (6) "I thought it was really lovely, you look very nervous, but you are in very safe hands. Just come back tomorrow with more confidence."

Total: 22

Lynda Bellingham and Darren Bennett

Len: (6) "At times you moved like you had both legs down one hole of your knickers! You've got to get around that floor some more, but it was great entertainment and you sold it. That was good. I liked it."

Bruno: (5) "A bit more dancing would help."

Craig: (3) "That was the longest one-minute-thirty of my life. It was boring with lots of vacuous looks."

Alesha: (7) "One word, fierce!"

Total: 21

Ali Bastian and Brian Fortuna

Len: (8) "I'm sorry for anyone who watched a different channel tonight because they just missed a fantastic Waltz."

Bruno: (7) "You have got it and I can wait to see you again!"

Craig: (7) "The top line needs some minor adjustments, but I thought it was fab-u-lous!"

Alesha: (8) "Definitely the most natural, gifted dancer so far, that leg extension was amazing. Beautiful."

Total: 30

Joe Calzaghe and Kristina Rihanoff

Len: (5) "You have the potential to go a long way, but that was a dance only a mother could love. I was expecting aggression but that's the one thing I didn't get."

Bruno: (4) "There was potential for steam, but that was the most boring tango. I know it's very hard but you have to come out here, get down on her, use her..."

Craig: (2) "I'll be quick. Passionless, lacked aggression and attack. You are lurching over Kristina. Your bottom sticks out."

Alesha: (5) "You looked petrified out there. You were smelling her hair at one point, it looked like you were smelling her hair! You are a very sexy couple, but you need to come out with more personality."

Total: 16
