The duo, who will perform a quickstep on Saturday's show, admitted that they would be worried if they ended up in the dance-off because of their recent bout of illness.
"Imagine trying to a quickstep with a chest infection," Johnson told DS. "You can't breathe. You're just stood there panting."
Professional dancer Waite said: "We're doing the quickest of quicksteps... It's a very demanding dance. We've just done it three times through and it nearly killed us."
The Olympic long-jumper added: "But If we can manage to do that, we'll be alright for one performance. The only thing is if we're in the dance-off - that's going to be a nightmare!"
Strictly continues on Saturday at 7pm on BBC One.
