Julian Clary: 'Arlene axe was ageist'

Former Strictly Come Dancing star Julian Clary has backed complaints over Arlene Phillips's removal from the show's judging panel.

The comedian told Scottish chatshow The Hour that he agrees with critics who have accused the BBC of axing Phillips because of her age.

Asked if he is watching the current series, Clary replied: "I am, but I'm missing Arlene Phillips a bit this year. She was like a mother to me when I did that show, unlike Craig Revel Horwood, who's like an uncle you wouldn't want to be left on your own with."

He continued: "I do think it's ageism really, because I can't think why else. She knew her stuff, and there's an awful rumour that Bruce Forysth might be next and they're going to replace him with someone younger."

Clary, who took part in the show's second series in 2004, announced last month that he is planning to write a musical with the 66-year-old choreographer.

Phillips was dropped from Strictly in July and replaced with popstar Alesha Dixon.
