The professional dancer, who finished second in the 2004 series with Denise Lewis, said that he was optimistic about their chances in the competition.
"Actually, I do want to come out of the closet. I want to tell everybody that we want to be in the final," he told It Takes Two. "I think because we have put all this work in, I think come on."
Johnson added: "I'm still looking at it week-by-week. I'm still amazed that I'm still here. I thought I would be out week three or four. I'll leave all the other thinking to Ian."
Speaking about their upcoming tango routine, the Olympic athlete said: "I'm loving it. I'm picking it up quite quickly. It is one of the dances that I love, so I'm really pleased to have actually made it this far to get to do it. There's a little bit of feistiness in it."
Waite commented: "I'm so excited because I haven't danced it since Zoe Ball in series three, so to get to do it again four years on is really exciting. It really suits Jade's personality."
Strictly continues on Saturday at 6.50pm on BBC One.
