Strictly Come Dancing star Russell Grant has declared that he would rather die than quit the show.

The 60-year-old has pledged to stay in the BBC contest despite requiring keyhole surgery to correct a knee injury next week.

"I'd rather samba myself to death and collapse on the dance floor than pull out," he told The Sun. "My fans expect nothing less. I can't go out with a whimper now.

"I just love doing Strictly more than anything I've ever done before. It is extraordinary the amount of love this has brought out in people."

Grant, who claimed that he would recover from the operation in time for next week's show, confessed that he feared the possible long-term repercussions of his injury.

"They thought it was internal bleeding, so you do worry. I could have injured myself for the rest of my life," he revealed. "I did feel it was over for me but I pushed it out of my mind.

"I've been clutching my crystals and rubbing them over my knee. If I don't have the operation now it could get worse. But I'd rather be voted out by the public than let something like this finish it for me."

An injured Grant scored 24 points for his tango on last Saturday's show. He is next set to dance the samba with partner Flavia Cacace.
