The 48-year-old singer, who was the runner-up in this year's competition, checked into the North London clinic yesterday after feeling "exhausted and emotionally drained".
Speaking to The Times, Chris Thompson from the Priory Group said that patients are expected to complete a 21-day course of treatment.
"You have to be referred here by a GP. We are talking about people with a diagnosable mental disorder," he explained.
A spokesperson for Talkback Thames said that Boyle is taking "a few days out for rest and recovery", but if she chooses to complete the recommended treatment then she could miss the live tour, which starts on June 12.
She is also expected to miss a scheduled trip to the US, where she has become a sensation thanks to a YouTube clip of her singing 'I Dream A Dream' from Les Miserables.
Thompson added: "That Susan Boyle appears to have broken down in some way so close to the end of the series suggests there is a link. I would want to know that people being exposed to such pressures are given proper care."
Earlier this week, judge Piers Morgan dismissed speculation that Boyle had suffered a breakdown, insisting that she entered the facility voluntarily in order to "get away from the show, the media, the public and have some downtime".
