Stephen Mulhern has defended Britain's Got Talent following singer Jessica Hobson's tears during yesterday's live show.

Piano player Hobson, who performed the Beyoncé track 'Single Ladies', was blasted by Simon Cowell after she attempted a dance routine in the middle of her song.

A tearful Hobson complained afterwards that she had not been allowed to choose her own track and that she had been advised to do it by producers. Fans protested on the Digital Spy forums and Twitter afterwards that the 19-year-old had been "set up" by Cowell and producers.

However, Mulhern defended the reality show during an appearance on This Morning, claiming that the producers' involvement is an important part of the programme.

"The reality is, the producers want the show to be right and they want performers and the auditionees to be the best they can be," he said. "So they'll help them, they'll support them, they'll guide them.

"She's amazing at the piano, I wish she'd stayed there at the piano but it just didn't work out."

The last Britain's Got Talent semi-final airs tonight at 7.30pm on ITV1.
