But while Digital Spy readers appear to doubt his credentials, the student's tender semi-final rendition of 'Iris' by the Goo Goo Dolls sent Twitter into meltdown and won the public vote in Wednesday's live show.
Though faced with stiff competition from acoustic rival Ryan O'Shaughnessy, there's a definite feeling that Kelly could be the dark horse to win this year's £500,000 prize money, and be rocketed into space by Simon Cowell.
We caught up with the 19-year-old to talk about his "challenging" finale song choice, his dream of gigging around the UK, and his devoted 'SAM-aritans'.
