Filming for the second series of the ITV1 reality show began last weekend, with Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan back on the panel.
The device was discovered in the judges' room at the Palace Theatre in Manchester after it was found to be interfering with sound and camera equipment.
Police were called and the audition was held up for 20 minutes while they looked into the incident.
Cowell said a freelance journalist may have left the bug in an attempt to overhear the panel's comments.
He added: "This shows the extent to which people will go to to get inside knowledge on what is going on."
