'The Apprentice': Episode one preview

It's back tonight! Yes, get ready for a brand new series of The Apprentice - more brilliant (and not-so-brilliant) candidates, more hilarious one-liners, more tricky tasks and, of course, more firings. Lord Sugar kicks off the show by warning the hopefuls that he's not "Saint Alan, the patron saint of bloody losers". It's probably safe to say that they're not exactly going to have an easy ride... Read on to get some hints about what else will be coming up in episode one!

Lord Sugar Sets The Task
The first task on The Apprentice often seems to be food-based, and this series is no exception. Lord Sugar splits the teams into boys and girls and gives each group £250 to spend on fruit and veg down the market - which they then have to turn into something they can sell to the public. Easy, right? Well, perhaps not.

The Fight for Project Manager
Of course, episode one of The Apprentice means the delightful team name discussion. But after all that, it's time for the groups to pick their project managers. Over on the boys' team, it's a head-to-head between Edward and Gavin. After Edward charmingly warns his rival that he won't have him "leading it and then ducking out when it hasn't worked", he wins the title. But will the rest of the guys be happy with him? Over with the girls, it's a battle between Helen and Melody - with Melody ending up victorious. But will she wish she hadn't won?

Rows Between The Boys
Maybe when Edward announces that his vision for the task is to "spend £250 on produce, mash it up as quickly as possible and sell it", the guys realise there might be trouble ahead. Their concerns probably aren't helped much when they discover that Edward has spent £150 on oranges - without even telling them. Ouch. Gavin reckons he could have done a better job, Leon is desperately juicing oranges as Edward urges him to go faster - and then the machines break and the team ends up squeezing out the drops by hand. Will they manage to get their drinks made in time? And will Vincent's attempts to use his flirtatious charm to flog juice to women work out?

...And Rows Between The Girls
There's not only tension on the boys' team, oh no. Over with the girls, their fruit salad starts to run out and the pasta isn't ready. Project Manager Melody isn't impressed and goes to join her sub-team at Euston station, but Edna might not be too happy about that. In fact, she makes some rather snarky comments about Melody coming "right at the end of the day telling us what to do when we have been doing this quite efficiently all day long". Gulp. Will they manage to resolve their differences - or at least ignore them for long enough to make a big profit?

The Firing
The first person to be fired from The Apprentice is... No, as if we'd tell you that! Instead you'll have to tune in to find out which team wins - and which team has to face the terrifying Sugar-Hewer-Brady combo. It's time for more backstabbing, self-preservation and desperate pleas to stay in the competition - what could be better? You know the drill... the PM of the losing team brings back two of their colleagues and the contestants throw all the normal rules of business etiquette out of the window in the hope that they won't be the ones to hear the dreaded words: "You're fired." Brilliant!
