Live: 'Being Human' panel at Comic-Con
Published Sunday, Jul 26 2009, 22:21 BST | By Neil Wilkes | 6 comments
2.22pm: I'm back in Ballroom 20 for the BBC America panel for Being Human. Torchwood will follow on straight after this.
2.23pm: We kick things off with a preview reel for the first season, which premiered on BBC America last night.
2.25pm: The panellists are on stage: creator Toby Whithouse, Lenora Crichlow (Annie), Russell Tovey (George) and Aidan Turner (Mitchell).
2.27pm: TW explains the genesis of the idea for the show. He says it started off as a show about three humans sharing a flat "but that was the dullest idea ever". Then he rewrote it as a sitcom, which was "rubbish", and then: "I pretended in my mind I was writing a low budget American independent film. Then that became the pilot script and there we are."
2.30pm: RT on his original thoughts on the show: "I thought the concept sounded a bit tacky, but after reading it I thought 'this is genius and I want to get involved 100%'. It's not a send-up, a spoof, it's rooted in humanity. The truth behind the characters is so special."
2.32pm: LC and AT agree with Russell's original thoughts on the show. AT: "But it's exciting and it's different."
2.33pm: The moderator asks why the show is set in Brighton, and is corrected - it's Bristol. Toby explains that because it was a BBC Wales commission it had to be set near there. "We felt Cardiff was already well served by Torchwood and Doctor Who, so we chose Bristol because it's close to Wales."
2.36pm: After a clip showcasing an angry Annie moment, Russell Tovey gets some self-pleasure from getting the crowd to do a Mexican wave.
2.41pm: Clip of George meeting another werewolf. "He encounters someone who's very confident in their werewolf state and George doesn't want to celebrate it. He's the only one of the three that's actually human. The other two are dead and going to stay dead. I'm going to go bald and grey."
2.43pm: RT asks the crowd if they've seen the show. Big cheers. "You've all seen my bum then, ain't you?" he asks.
2.44pm: Mitchell clip now. "He's beautiful, isn't he?" asks RT. "Fit! Fit!" agrees LC.
2.45pm: Toby talks a bit about what happens this season. Annie trying to find out who killed her and why, for George it's acceptance and for Mitchell it's coming to terms with vampirism and his relationship with humanity. Of course we know all this already, don't we readers?
2.49pm: Question time. Woman asks about the social allegories with the show and how intentional they are. Few jokes about STDs and shagging werewolves - but in short, the answer is yes.
2.52pm: Q about the afterlife and how that will be developed going forward. "It's something we do develop a lot in series two," says TW. "In series two, without giving anything away, the afterlife that awaits them is more fully explored. You will get an answer in about a year's time."
2.53pm: British girl asks about series two. "We start filming series two when we get back," says LC. TW says TX will be January 2010, adding that next time it will be eight eps instead of six. "We will work our way up to the American number of episodes slowly," jokes Russell.
2.54pm: TW: "What I've tried to do is have a completely unbroken line from series one to series two. There's darkness and light, and comedy and horror. I'm storylining the last episode at the moment and there's probably going to be some running down corridors."
2.57pm: TW says cherry picked vamp stories - certain parts of mythology used. "In theory, it's possible for vampires to come off blood." Story of redemption meant that Mitchell had to come off the blood.
2.59pm: And that's a wrap! Stick with us - Torchwood panel coming up next!

I felt series 1 went off the boil mid way through. I think Mitchell is the weak link storyline wise(perhaps because vampires have been so overdone in TV and film) and I felt it became too much about him. I find Annie and Russell Tovey's character a lot more interesting. I'll still be tuning in for series 2 though (I still say series not season, too americanised)

Its awesome they got a panel! Such an amazing show I hope its got years and years in front of it... so long as they are good and don't destroy and tear to shreds a perfectly amazing show into something it never was for a perfectly good reason within the last 2 episodes of a miniseries...but no ones THAT dumb? are they???
