Mortgage advisor Amanda and food writer Alex have triumphed in the latest pair of MasterChef heats.

Judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace praised the duo and elected to send them through to next Monday's quarter-final.

In the first heat, Alex, 26, dished up duck breast and crackling, spiced tobacco caramel, pickled cucumber, potato rosti and a watercress and duck heart salad. His dessert was a gooseberry fool with cassis and elderberry reduction and cat's tongue biscuits.

Speaking about Alex's duck dish, Torode said: "That is so cool, so cool." Wallace added: "That is an amalgamation of flavours, which work perfectly."

Amanda, 32, impressed in the Final Test with pan fried scallops on black pudding and butternut squash pureee, followed by pancetta wrapped monkfish with a butterbean and chorizo stew with rocket. "It's wet slippery, sweet, peppery... I do like those flavours," said Wallace about her monkfish.

After winning the heat, Amanda said: "Getting through to the quarter-final, I am now more determined than ever that I really want this."

MasterChef continues tonight at 8pm on BBC One.
