The cookery competition averaged 5.92m (23.3%) for BBC One in the 9pm hour, peaking at a healthy 7.03m (28.1%) in the final 15 minutes when Tim Anderson was crowned the champion.
MasterChef also performed well against live coverage of Barcelona's 'El Classico' victory against Real Madrid in the Champions League, which pulled in 6.27m (27.4%) on ITV1 between 7.30pm and 10pm.
Elsewhere on BBC One, DIY SOS: The Big Build built 5.31m (26%) from 7.30pm, before comedy Life Of Riley amused 3.89m (17.1%) from 8.30pm. Would I Lie To You? had 2.12m (15.5%) from 10.45pm.
On BBC Two, Live Snooker - The World Championship mustered 1.27m (6.8%) in the 7pm hour. Giles & Sue's Royal Wedding served up 1.16m (5.2%) between 8pm and 8.45pm, before Coast grabbed 910k (3.9%). Psychological drama The Crimson Petal And The White enchanted 1.28m (5%) in the 9pm hour and The Victorians averaged 520k (2.5%) from 10pm.
Vacation, Vacation, Vacation had 1.02m (4.7%) on Channel 4 between 8pm and 8.30pm, with 128k (0.5%) watching the show on +1. It was followed by Superscrimpers: Waste Not, Want Not, which had 1.48m (6.5%) and 151k (0.6%) on timeshift.
Kate And William: A Royal Romance fetched 1.27m (5%) on Channel 4 from 9pm and 148k (0.8%) on +1. Desperate Housewives grabbed 950k (5.2%) from 10pm and 160k (1.6%) an hour later.
Channel 5's Zoo Days fetched 488k (2.5%) on Channel 5 from 7.30pm, before new series Essex Jungle had 774k (3.5%). NCIS and Law & Order: Criminal Intent brought in 1.73m (6.8%) and 1.01k (5.4%) respectively from 9pm.
Overall, ITV1 won primetime with 24% (+1: 0.2%) against BBC One's 22.9%. BBC Two and Channel 4 came jointly in third with 5% (C4+1: 0.6%), followed by Channel 5 with 4.5%.
Elsewhere, The Only Way Is Essex dazzled 1.18m (5.9%) on ITV2 from 10pm and 176k (1.6%) on ITV2+1. Kerry Katona: The Next Chapter entertained 576k (2.3%) on the channel from 9pm and 147k (0.8%) on timeshift.
Documentary If Walls Could Talk: The History Of the Home captivated 609k (2.4%) on BBC Four in the 9pm hour, up 236k week-on-week.
