Who showrunner Steven Moffat co-created the new take on the famous detective with Mark Gatiss, who has written several episodes for the sci-fi series.
In an appearance on BBC Breakfast, Holmes actor Cumberbatch dismissed comparisons to Who.
"I don't think there's that much of a crossover," he said.
However, he did admit that Holmes and the character of the Doctor are similar in some aspects.
"Stylistically you have [a lead character who is] a maverick [and] an outsider... who's incredibly smart and fast-thinking," he explained.
Cumberbatch recently hinted to DS that he could appear in several future Doctor Who episodes.
Sherlock begins this Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
