Sherlock writer Mark Gatiss has revealed that he would like to include more classic elements from the original Holmes stories in future episodes.

He told Den of Geek that a potential future series would feature the detective's nemesis Moriarty.

"Without giving too much away, what we'd like to do if we get some more is tackle some of the favourite stuff," he explained. "And what that would mean, if we could, would be to start then making it feel like our version."

He added: "So, if anybody was to say [we are] doing Moriarty too quickly, it's really about not deferring your pleasures, you know? Why wait for season five?"

Gatiss also hinted that a second series could see John Watson (Martin Freeman) get married.

"[In] this series of three, [it] could be [that] John gets married as he does in the original stories," he said. "What does that do to the dynamic? There's so much to play around with."

The first series of Sherlock concludes this Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
