The show's co-creator Mark Gatiss spoke out on Twitter to deny reports that the hit detective drama would debut its third series in mid-September.
Gatiss - who also plays Mycroft Holmes on the show - revealed that Sherlock will now take a mid-series filming break following completion of its first two episodes, with the series three finale to shoot "later in the summer".
Incidentally, anything online about transmission dates etc is entirely bogus. Noting will be decided for months yet. #Sherlock— Mark Gatiss (@Markgatiss) May 23, 2013
Sherlock producer Sue Vertue later reiterated the statement, shooting down the September transmission rumours for a second time.
Hello everybody, sorry to be repetitive but no, #sherlock is not (nor ever was) going out in September. We don't have airdate confirmed yet.— sue vertue (@suevertue) May 23, 2013
Steven Moffat recently confirmed to Digital Spy that a fourth series of Sherlock is yet to be officially confirmed, despite star Benedict Cumberbatch's claims back in March.
