Sherlock's fourth and fifth series have already been "plotted out", co-creator Steven Moffat has revealed.

Speaking at a screening for the series three finale, 'His Last Vow', Moffat reassured fans that he was already thinking ahead for future episodes of the detective drama.

Sherlock's fourth and fifth series are already being planned

"Rather excitingly, Mark [Gatiss] and I, for no particular reason, we just got out of the rain and sat at the top of the [Sherlock] production bus and we just started plotting out what we could do in the future," said Moffat.

"And we plotted out the whole of series four and five.

"So we have got plans - but our plans don't tend to be, 'Let's blow up the world or cast the most famous person in the world', they tend to be, 'What exciting twists and turns can we add to this?' And I think we've got some crackers.

"The ideas we had that day, I thought, were the best we've ever had."

A fourth series of Sherlock has not been officially confirmed by the BBC, but is expected to be announced soon. Scheduling for series four will depend on the schedules of its lead stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.

Sherlock's series three finale, 'His Last Vow', airs on Sunday, January 12, at 8.30pm on BBC One.
