Reality TV Interview

Taryn ('Coach Trip')

By
Taryn ('Coach Trip')
Jackie and Susan got us giggling, Tom and Matt offer japes and scrapes, and Brendan... well, Brendan will always give us something very special indeed. But the glamour on this series of Coach Trip has undoubtedly been provided by Holly and Taryn, a couple of fun-loving London girls who even managed to look foxy in wetsuits. Their Coach Trip journey came to an unexpected halt on today's show, so we called Taryn to find out what happened before and after they said their goodbyes.

Why exactly did you have to leave Coach Trip?
"There were quite a few reasons actually. We'd both had enough because the show is quite tiring from one day to another, but we had to get back to work too. Holly needed to make the rent for her apartment! Plus I was really missing my boyfriend and wanted to be back with him."

Why do you think you lasted so long on the show?
"Because we went in with open minds. Not everyone's going to get on with each other, but we always tried to bring out the best in people and find the positives. We became very friendly with Jackie and Susan - they became our coach mummies! - and Tom and Matt, so we formed a little group of people we were close to. Some people would call it an alliance, but at the end of the day if you're going to be stuck on a coach for hours you want to be with people you're going to have a laugh with."

Much has been made of the so-called "voting alliance". How did it form?
"At the beginning it was a natural thing - we all had the same reasons for wanting to vote people off. But then it became more of a spoken thing, though obviously we weren't going to ask people 'Who are you voting for?' on camera. If we didn't trust a certain couple, we'd say something like 'They're probably going to vote for Holly and me, so maybe you guys could defend us and vote for them?'."

Some of the couples thought Tracey was the puppet-master behind the voting alliance. Is that fair?
"Oh no, I love Tracey! Tracey and James, Holly and myself, Tom and Matt and Graham and Ivy all kind of stuck together, but there was no one person saying 'This is how we're going to vote and you must follow'. We all had our reasons but a lot of the time they tended to be pretty similar."

Did you feel guilty when Charlie and Caroline rumbled the voting alliance?
"Ah... I watched that episode last night. When Charlie and Caroline arrived on the coach we knew straight away they were going to vote for us - not because we thought they wouldn't like us, but because we're young girls and that makes us an easy target. But I was quite taken aback when they said we didn't make that much effort, because I'd spoken to Charlie quite a bit about the university she was going to. They're a great mum and daughter, but they were much too emotional about the whole game. Holly and I also got upset when people voted for us, but we didn't want to cry when the cameras were around."

Which Coach Trippers have you stayed in touch with?
"Obviously Holly! I speak to Tracey and James and exchange emails every now and then with Jackie and Susan."

How about Tom and Matt?
"I don't keep in contact with Tom and Matt, but Holly's now going out with Tom and they're living in Australia together. I'm really happy for Holly because you don't expect to meet someone on a TV show and end up moving in with them! Apparently Matt's got a one-year visa to work out there so he's staying with them too."

Was there ever any chance of romance between you and Matt?
"Oh my gosh no! First of all, I'm 25 and he's like 18 or 19. Also I've had a boyfriend the whole time so I wasn't interested - it was just teasing banter. Plus he's not my type at all! I think Matt was a bit upset that I had a boyfriend, but he's like a little kid brother to me."

Could you tell romance was blossoming between Holly and Tom on the coach?
"Yeah, a lot of people thought it was just for the cameras, but I know Holly inside out and I could see that she was glowing with happiness. At the beginning I'm sure it was on Holly's mind that there was an age difference, because Holly's slightly older than me, but once I got to know Tom I could see why they'd be so good together. They're both really lighthearted and like to have fun, so I'm sure they're very happy together."

Finally, are you happy with how you and Holly were portrayed on the show?
"I knew how Holly and I were going to be portrayed. At the end of the day people thought we were quite stuck up. They thought we were all about the glitz and the glamour and never said anything intelligent, but Holly and I are the complete opposites of that. Obviously the show wants a story for every single couple so it's manipulated and edited in a certain way, but I'm fine with that because at the end of the day we wanted to bring some fun and entertainment to the coach. Whatever people say about us, we never got a yellow card and I don't think anyone could say we weren't friendly and nice to the other couples."

Coach Trip airs Monday to Friday at 5pm on Channel 4.
