Tom and Matt ('Coach Trip')

By
Tom and Matt ('Coach Trip')
After racking up the longest ever stay on board Brendan's coach, likely lads Tom and Matt finally received their marching orders on day 25 of the Coach Trip. How did it feel to get the boot just five days from the end? What really went on between Tom and Ann? And what special treat does Tom have in store for GaySpy readers? We caught up with the boys - now living in Australia with fellow coachie Holly - to reminisce about their experience.

Did you know that you were going to be getting a red card before you did?
Tom: "Yeah, we were completely sure. We actually dressed up for it, because we knew we were going. We got all pretty!"
Matt: "We had kind of accepted ourselves that we wanted to leave, because although we got on with people, they weren't really our type of people. We accepted it - and it was obvious that the votes were coming our way because we had been manipulating them earlier on in the series."

Is that really why you were voted off, though? Alliance aside, you seemed to be quite popular.
Tom: "From their point of view, if we'd have been playing the game and had been in their shoes, we would have voted us off as well. I guess we were a threat, so fair play."

Was it frustrating to be booted just five days from the end, though?
Tom: "We were getting a bit tired. It was almost a relief when we went actually. Even though we enjoyed it and we'd have quite liked to have stayed until the end, we just wanted to get a nice night's sleep."
Matt: "We would have wanted to win, but we wanted to do it with good memories and enjoy the people on the trip, so there was no point staying on the coach for the sake of it if we weren't going to have a good time."

Apart from Holly, obviously, who have you stayed in touch with?
Tom: "We're kind of still in contact with Will, and James and Tracy..."
Matt: "Even Daz added us on Facebook. I don't think there was anyone we didn't get on with, but we had to play the game. So at the time it seemed we were being a bit mean but we were actually quite nice and got on with everyone."

Did you say Daz is on Facebook? How about Betty?
Tom: "I wish!"
Matt: "She's right eye candy."

Did you have a least favourite couple?
Tom: "I guess you'd expect me to see Ann and Mark, but actually Ann was quite entertaining, apart from the whole sexual abuse thing. Other than that, I quite enjoyed her company."

Matt, did you fancy Taryn?
Tom: "Matt's gay! There's no denying it..."

Well yes Matt, it's been suggested that you might have a thing for Tom...
Matt: "I wasn't used to talking to a camera, so obviously if someone was speaking, I was going to look at them."
Tom: "We used to spoon. No denying it."

So Tom, what actually happened with Ann?
Tom: "I think the girls stole my trunks and hid them to begin with, but I don't really mind that. I don't know why Ann did what she did. I think she was trying to belittle me a bit. I think she did also fancy me - and she did offer to 'finish the job', in her words. That's where most of the shock came from - it wasn't just that I had two cold hands covering my unmentionable lower below! She thought I wanted it, I think."

And were you tempted to give that to her?
Tom: "Well obviously Holly had gone by this point and I was a bit desperate. No, I only had eyes for Matt, I'm afraid, after that."

How did you end up in Australia after finishing Coach Trip?
Tom: "I came back from the show, literally went straight from the airport to Holly's place and just never went home after that. We were sitting in London not doing a lot really. Holly decided to quit her job because she wasn't happy there and we just decided to move to Australia, kind of spur of the moment and went for it."

Have you been following what people have been saying about you on Digital Spy?
Tom: "We've definitely seen the GaySpy comments. I'm quite happy with a gay fanbase. They have high standards so I'm happy with that! But we've also been on the forums a little bit, in and out, just catching up."

Do you have a message for the forum users?
Matt: "I don't know how we were perceived, but we had an amazing time on there and learned a lot. We were just trying to have the best experience we could."
Tom: "I think we were portrayed as running away from the group, so things like me playing the grand piano weren't shown."
Matt: "Yeah, even in last week's episode where we polluted the water, they didn't show my painting, which was really good. They didn't show our mosaics or birds, because that's not what we were supposed to be. We were typecast!"

Finally, Tom - are you willing to do any special photos for your GaySpy fanbase?
Tom: "I would definitely go completely nude for anyone who wanted to see it. It's a huge compliment to be on GaySpy, so if you want any photos, just hit me up."

Coach Trip continues weekdays at 5pm on Channel 4.
