Big Brother Obituary: Mikey Hughes

Mikey Hughes was the runner-up of Big Brother 9, polling 48.7% of the final vote.

The radio producer, who has been blind for the last ten years, lost out to Rachel in the final of the reality show.

Mikey clashed with Sylvia on his third day in the house when she did not take kindly to him wearing her knickers in the bath after Mario's stag party. The pair argued again when he accused her of keeping him awake at night by being noisy.

Mikey made an early friend in Mario, who watched out for him and expressed concern that he was being bullied by his fellow housemates.

The pair were sent to jail for discussing nominations on Day 24, with Mikey doing bird again on Day 32 after hinting that he would nominate Belinda if she continued to snore

Housemates felt that they had developed a "new respect" for Mikey after completing Day 25's 'Blind Leading The Blind' task, during which they took turns to don a blindfold and be guided around the house.

Mikey threw himself into the tasks in the house, including putting on puppet shows for the Bunraku task and performing as Kiki Dee alongside Darnell's Elton John in the Viva Las Vegas variety show. He also shaved all his hair off in a bid to help the group fill a jar with their hair on Day 67. He had earlier surprised housemates by shaving off his eyebrows for fun on Day 28.

Mikey was chosen to be a member of the Hell side of the house by Head of House Darnell and stayed another week after Dale took over. He managed to make it into Heaven on the third week of the divide after finishing in the first four in the chilli challenge. However, his success went to his head and he bravely tackled a scotch bonnet, one of the world's hottest chillis, causing him to feel like he was having a heart attack.

Mikey moved back to Hell on Day 59 after coming in the bottom three in the alphabet task. While there, he attempted to eat 300 sprouts with Kat and Nicole in a bid to earn the right to nominate, eventually pouring the half-chewed remains over his head after giving up.

He became Head of House himself on Day 66 after Rachel named Hell the winners of the cake-making task.

Mikey was not afraid to speak his mind in the house and was involved in several disputes. He argued with Kat on Day 68 after she became angry when he squirted water at her for dozing. He disliked Rex and girlfriend Nicole and was outspoken in his opinion of the couple as selfish and arrogant.

He declared that he would not be friends with Rex after the show on Day 71. On Day 76, he became angry over Rex's suggestion that he sit out the 'Thriller' task and clashed with both Rex and Nicole during rehearsals the next day.

On Day 78, he sparked a row between the couple over Steph and told Lisa that he was "furious" with Rex for keeping him awake on Day 84. Later the same day, Rex confronted him after hearing his explanation for nominating Nicole. His antipathy towards Rex increased in the last two weeks of the show.

Mikey developed a close friendship with Rachel towards the end of his time in the house, but told Mohamed on Day 89 that he did not fancy her, contrary to housemates' opinions.
