The former Mr Gay UK contestant's mother was out shopping when she suffered a brain aneurysm in 2007.
Charlie's grandmother Sarah Smith told The Sun that the 22-year-old customer services advisor had earned his place in this year's Big Brother show.
"He's been through an awful lot of trauma and there is nobody more deserving to be in that house," she stated.
The 78-year-old added: "His mam will be so proud. We all are - he's a right character. I'm hoping she'll be able to recognise him on television."
Sharon is back home being cared for by her family, but is reportedly not expected to show any signs of recovery for at least three years.
