Brian Dowling has been confirmed as the host of Big Brother on Channel 5, while Emma Willis is to front a new spinoff show.

Dowling, who was the winner of Big Brother 2 and Ultimate Big Brother, said that he was excited to be part of a programme that had "entertained the nation for 11 years".

"I am so excited about this opportunity to host one of the most talked-about shows on TV. It is 10 years since I won Big Brother so what better way to celebrate and mark that anniversary than to be asked to host the new series," he said.

"It's on a new channel and a fresh start for the show that has kept the nation entertained for 11 years and I am so excited to be a part of it!"

Willis will front an all-new sister show called Big Brother's Bit On The Side. It will be scheduled around the main programme and feature a "vibrant, fast-paced and edgy take on all the developments and news from the house". It will include interviews with housemates, famous superfans and pop culture experts.

She said: "I'm so happy that Big Brother is back on our screens! I'm such a massive fan of the show so I'm over the moon that I've been asked to be a part of it. I can't wait to get stuck in."

Jeff Ford, Channel 5's director of programmes, claimed that he was "delighted" with the two appointments.

"As the Ultimate Big Brother housemate, Brian is the perfect man to be at the helm of Big Brother's new incarnation," said Ford.

"Emma meanwhile is a consummate professional - as well as being a self-confessed superfan. Their combined expertise and first-hand experience of the show will bring an extra dimension to Big Brother when it returns this summer."
