Channel 5 has announced that Big Brother's live feed has been axed for the upcoming series of the show.

The broadcaster confirmed previous reports that the 24-hour stream from the Elstree compound has been replaced by a variety of social media applications.

"Following speculation surrounding the live feed, we can confirm there will not be a 24-hour live feed from the house available online or on-air," Channel 5 revealed.

"This year, we have decided to focus on the nightly highlights show and on directly engaging with the show's viewers through social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and specially created iPhone, iPad and Android apps.

"The aim is to reflect the habits of our audience today and we believe that prioritising social media is the way to get people involved in the show."

Big Brother fans today hit out at Channel 5's reluctance to confirm the future of the live feed.

Channel 4 faced a backlash after axing the show's live feed in 2009, prompting the station to reinstate the service for its final edition last year.

Channel 5's first series of Celebrity Big Brother will debut on Thursday at 9pm.
